Acid Reflux In Infants
When most of us think about heartburn we rarely consider acid reflux infants, but this condition (heartburn, acid reflux, gerd) is quite common in babies. In fact, more than half of all infants experience acid reflux within the first three months of their lives. The good news is that only a small number of infants experience the more serious symptoms.
Here are four things you should know about acid reflux infants:
1. What To Look For
Obviously, infants can’t explain where it hurts or how they’re feeling. This can make it difficult to know when your baby may be experiencing acid reflux. There are clues that should point you in the right direction, however. Here are some of things you should look for:
* Is your infant experiencing sleeping problems?
* Is your infant coughing even though there’s no evidence of a cold?
* Has your infant experienced weight loss?
* Has your infant exhibited a lack of appetite?
* Does he or she spit up frequently?
* Does he or she exhibit unusual irritability?
* Is there chest pain?
* Is there a sore throat?
* Does your baby have bad breath that’s reminiscent of vomit?
* Is your baby crying for no apparent reason?
2. What’s Going On
Acid reflux infants can be in incredible pain, as you’ll probably understand if you’ve ever experienced heartburn for yourself. The pain is the result of stomach acid rising into the esophagus. For an infant, this commonly occurs during or after a feeding. The pain is the stomach acid irritating the esophagus lining and sometimes the back of the throat.
3. Acid Reflux Infants – Causes
There are several causes of acid reflux in babies. These are generally exacerbated by the fact that infants mostly consume liquids, while spending most of their time throughout the day lying on their backs. It’s easier for liquids to rise back up into the esophagus than solids. And the process of lying down adds pressure to the esophageal sphincter which normally keeps the stomach contents confined to the stomach.
Other potential causes to be aware of include poor eating habits, being overweight, and food allergies.
4. Consult With Your Pediatrician
If you have a suspicion that your infant may be experiencing acid reflux, even a minor case, you should consult with your pediatrician. Be prepared to explain the symptoms you’ve noticed, the eating habits of your baby, and any other clues that you believe to be relevant.
Acid reflux infants are not unusual and there’s no cause for concern as long as you’re aware of the situation and you’ve taken the time to consult with your pediatrician. Often the condition can be rectified simply by changing some basic eating and sleeping habits.

Foods To Avoid If You Have Acid Reflux
In this article we will learn about these foods whose intake can either be completely avoided or minimized if you have acid reflux. For most people coffee, tea is something that gets them through a hectic day. Chocolates, rich desserts, spicy food etc. are what can be called as pleasures or indulgences of life.
Like always, eating anything in excess is not going to be good for you. The key is to eat moderately whatever it may be.
Sometimes we do tend to overeat a bit when it comes to our favorite foods. When that happens, many are bound to experience some discomfort such as a heartburn, but for them that is something that will be short lived.
But for people suffering from acid reflux, eating the above mentioned foods either normally or even a little bit is going to trigger their acid reflux symptoms and make their condition worse.
It must also be noted that the above mentioned foods are a general list and the list of foods to avoid or eat varies from each person.
So what does one do especially if one is suffering from recurring acid reflux.
The answer is simple pay attention to what one eats and eat it wisely.
By carefully monitoring what you eat, when you eat and what foods seem to trigger acid reflux, you can avoid experiencing these painful symptoms for a longer period of time.
By keeping track of which foods to be strictly avoided, which can be eaten sparingly is one good way of getting relief from acid reflux.

Apple Cider Vinegar – Foods Reflux cure
Possibly the best natural short term reflux cure, this one works for more people than any other. I personally had better results with the mustard cure (see it here).
All you have to do for the Apple Cider Vinegar cure is:
Take 2 Teaspoons of Apple Cider Vinegar in water, 3x a day. Take a stronger solution (more vinegar, less water) directly after a heavy meal if you are treating acid reflux.
As treatments come this one is pretty cheap, you are looking at £2-5 for Apple Cider Vinegar.
You may have to try a few different brands of Apple Cider Vinegar before you find the one that works best with your body. With this cure being such a cheap one it shouldnt cause you to go broke while finding the brand of Apple Cider Vinegar that works best for you.
Please keep in mind that this is only a short term solution, unless you take it everyday throughout the day. I personally would not recommend this.

Reflux Cure Options Your Doctor May Advise
Those suffering with reflux will know just know painful and infuriating the condition can be. Whilst there are a number of natural treatments that often work, in some cases it is necessary to look to other methods for an effective reflux cure. Your doctor will advise you on whether you may need medication or surgery to prevent reflux.
Antacids or Other Medication
Antacids are commonly used to treat the symptoms of reflux, and relieve the pain of heartburn. However, they are not recommended for long-term use so your doctor will also advise other measures. They work by neutralising the pH levels in your stomach which can help to reduce the amount of acid.
Antacids may also be used in conjunction with a number of other drugs that either work to reduce the pH levels in your stomach or that strengthen the LES. Drugs can prove extremely successful in preventing reflux as well as treating individual symptoms, though in more severe cases it may be necessary to perform surgery in order to solve the problem.
Surgery
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the above drug treatments are usually successful as a reflux cure. However, in some cases there may be complications leaving surgery a necessary option. Your doctor will advise you of whether this is likely to be the case. Surgery will often provide a successful reflux cure.
Reflux surgery involves a procedure known as fundoplication, and can be done using laparoscopy which helps to pass small surgical tools into the abdomen to treat the condition. Therefore, there is no major incision. After surgery most of the symptoms and complications of GERD will have gone within the next few years. However, many patients will still continue to take drugs as a way of relieving symptoms. There is rarely the need for further surgery.
Endoscopy
Endoscopy is a newer treatment used as a reflux cure, specifically for those with GERD. It works to tighten the LES, which can help limit the chances of reflux. This can be done either by stitching part of the LES, or by using radio waves to create scar tissue that will tighten the area.
If doctors recommend endoscopy then this means you can avoid surgery for the treatment of reflux. However, due to the fact that this procedure is newer than surgery there is limited knowledge as to how successful the procedures are. It may be the case that they become less effective over time, resulting in the need for repeat procedures or further treatment measures. Therefore, endoscopy is most commonly used in trials at present.
Conclusion
If you suffer from reflux then it may be the case that a reflux cure comes in the form of dietary and lifestyle changes rather than medication or surgery. However, surgery can be a useful option to solve any complications. Your doctor will advise you as to which treatment method could work best, and would be most suitable, for you. It is important to seek advice before making any decisions as to the treatment you may like to take.

Changes in Lifestyle Reflux Foods to Bear in Mind
If you suffer from reflux then there is nothing to say that treatment will be as extreme as medication or surgery. In fact, many doctors will recommend a series of lifestyle changes before making an decisions about further treatment.
In order to understand why these lifestyle and diet changes work, you need to understand why reflux occurs. In short, reflux happens due to acid in the stomach being regurgitated through a relaxed gullet (more specifically, the lower oesophageal sphincter, or LES). This acid causes the unpleasant symptoms that you may experience, including heartburn. Avoiding certain reflux foods and making small changes in your life can help to reduce the acid or pressure that causes the reflux.
Elevation of the Body At Night
Many who suffer with reflux find that it is more prominent during the night than it is during the day. When you are lying down to sleep it is easier for reflux to happen, due to certain factors including simple gravity. The acid that refluxes through the gullet may stay there for longer, making the effects more serious than they would be in the day.
Thankfully, simply elevating the body at night can help to reduce these symptoms. This can be done by sleeping on some sort of wedge that raises your upper body, therefore allowing gravity to do its work if reflux does occur. This treatment will generally be recommended to all reflux patients, though it may not help if you only experience reflux during the day.
Changes in Diet
As a more effective reflux treatment method, many patients will learn to avoid certain reflux foods to improve symptoms and the likelihood of the condition occurring again. Firstly it is important not only to look at the foods you eat, but also your eating habits. Reflux is more likely if your stomach is full, as this will put pressure on your LES. Therefore you could try to eat smaller meals, as well as avoiding eating meals late at night before bed so that your stomach can empty a little before you lie down.
There are certain foods that can either be reduced from your diet or cut out altogether to reduce reflux. Reflux foods include chocolate, caffeinated drinks, fatty foods, citrus fruits, spicy foods and so on. Not all foods may irritate symptoms of reflux for all people, so it may take a period of experimentation as well as consultation with a nutritionist before you discover exactly how to change your diet.
Conclusion
These are some simple changes that anyone can make before considering the use of medication or the need for surgery. As well as avoiding reflux foods, it is also important to stop drinking alcohol and to stop smoking. Consult your doctor before making any serious changes to your diet. They will also be able to monitor your progress to determine the best treatment for your reflux.

What to Do When Foods Reflux
Reflux is an extremely common problem in which the contents of the stomach regurgitate, or reflux, back through the oesophagus (gullet). This can lead to a number of symptoms, experienced differently by different people. Heartburn is an extremely common complaint, and if you suffer from it regularly you may be suffering with reflux.
When foods reflux you don’t just have to wait through the pain. There are a number of things you can do to improve symptoms and to prevent it from happening again. Your doctor may prescribe drugs and lifestyle changes, but there is no one cure that fits everybody. Therefore, it is important to discover what works for you with a combination of dietary tactics, natural remedies and simple changes.
Natural Remedies
There are natural remedies that can help ease the symptoms when foods reflux. One of the most popular are liquorice capsules which can help to neutralise the acidity which causes the pain of reflux. They can help to reduce pain immediately, and you should use them alongside other preventative measures.
It is also a great idea to make small changes in your diet, such as avoiding eating foods late at night and eating smaller meals so that there is less pressure in your stomach. Fatty and fried foods can slow down digestion, leaving acid in your stomach for longer and increasing the chances of reflux. Cutting such foods out of your diet to some degree will help prevent reflux from recurring.
Relax
It has been suggested that stress can contribute to the likelihood of foods reflux. This is due to the fact that stress generally slows down the digestive system. When this happens, your stomach will be more full with food due to a lack of oxygen that has instead been sent to other parts of the body under stress.
When your stomach is full this increases the pressure on your lower oesophageal sphincter (LES). If you already have a weak LES then the chances are that acid from your stomach will pass back through it, leading to the painful symptoms of reflux. Therefore, trying to relax can be a great place to start. However, it is important to relax without turning to cigarettes, comfort eating or alcohol as these can all relax the LES.
Stop Smoking
As mentioned above, smoking cigarettes can increase the chance of foods reflux due to the effect they have on stomach acid and the LES. Non-smokers will have a higher level of chemicals in their saliva that help to neutralise stomach acid, therefore stomach acid takes longer to clear in smokers. It is strongly advised to give up smoking all together as a preventative measure regarding foods reflux, as those who only give up during a period of reflux do not usually see immediate effect.
Conclusion
There is often more that can be done to prevent reflux than there is to immediately relieve symptoms without visiting your doctor. If these methods do not work then your doctor may prescribe something to help manage the condition.

Mustard as a short term reflux cure
Mustard and acid reflux have been linked together for some time now. When I first read about it I was not sure that it would work but one night when I just couldn’t sleep I decided I would give it a try.
I had read that swallowing a teaspoon of mustard would make the reflux go away. So I swallowed a teaspoon, all that did was make it much worse!! Ohh no I thought it must have just been someone having a laugh at reflux sufferers.
I thought since I was now in real pain what harm could it really do to try another teaspoon ( I really was desperate!) . Well it made no difference at all. I grabbed a big glass and filled it to the top with cold water and drank it as fast as I could. about 3 seconds after I finished the glass it was gone.
I have since used this little trick time and time again.
The method:
1. Prepare a pint of cool water.
2. Swallow two teaspoons of mustard – do it quickly (if you are anything like me you will not even like mustard)
3. Drink the glass of water you prepared about 30 seconds ago.
You should now be feeling much better.
I should warn you this does not work for everyone, although a large percentage of people that have tried it have had success with it.
